Camping yurts are lightweight, portable shelters, ideal for family camping, vacations, temporary accommodation, special events, or even weddings. They are very spacious with lots of headroom, yet pack-down small and can be easily loaded on a car roof. Our Yurts are an investment in both beauty and practicality, no camping shelter is more attractive and utilizes space as efficiently as a Yurt.
Yurts were originally created by the Mongolians hundreds if not thousands of years ago. Unlike the permanent yurts you now see in many State Parks and campgrounds, our Yurts are more traditional in the sense they are lightweight and portable. They are specially designed for camping, weighing in at about 120lbs (12ft yurt) and are very, simple to set up and take down -as you will see from the video further down the page.
Camping Yurts used in REI's Christmas Brochure
Chistmas came early for us this year.
We were invited by REI back in May to travel up to Mount Baker in Washington to be part of the photo shoot for their Christmas/Winter brocure. It was a fun trip with the REI crew, although it was a little odd having all the Christmas gear out so early!
REI are not actually selling our yurts just yet, they borrowed this one for the Christmas photo shoot. But who knows one day, they too might realize the beauty and functionality of yurts too!
The brocure is now in the stores and we are very pleased to find we are on the cover - well not us per say, but the new 16ft high wall yurt is:-)
More new yurt models are coming out in 2013 - info to come.
Office Yurts - A whole new idea!
Meraki.com, a high tech company in San Francisco recently approached us to create some custom yurts for their office. They wanted three 12ft yurts to be used indoors as relaxed, informal meeting/work rooms in their busy office.
The yurts needed to made in Cherry wood, use three different colored canvas, have higher walls (65") instead of the usual 54", have four slim vertical windows per yurt and include double wooden doors with a simple latch.
Oh, and it all had to be done in less than 3 weeks!
This type of "indoor yurt" was a first for us and they turned out really well. I can't think of a better space to have a meeting on low comfortable couches inside a yurt.
Our "indoor yurts" are already being used at shows and expos, but this is a great new idea.
Our Camping Yurts featured in Honda's New CR-V Advertising Campaign
In late Summer 2011, we were approached by a big advertising agency to see if we had three yurts available for a major car manufacturer's photo shoot! Of course we jumped at the opportunity and had a great time setting up the shoot in Klamath Falls, Oregon (about 2hrs south of us).
We were not allowed to talk about it for a few months, but since the Honda's new CRV came out in December 2011, we can shout about it. The above photo is the center page spread of Honda's new CRV brochure - very cool.
Richard Waters interviewed at the Medford Green Show
Our yurts can be used for year-round camping. You stay cool in the summer, by raising the bottom of the wall canvas, which draws-in cool air and the warm air rises and exits through the roof wheel in the center.
You can keep snug and warm in winter by simply adding a wood stove - perfect for those winter hunting trips. Our yurts are not designed for permenant living, but for camping, temprary accommodation in the back yard, workshops, quiet spaces etc. etc. Many States are now requireing planning permission for yurts, but as these are camping yurts and truly temporary, they are exempt. (Check with local laws though).
Yurts and Gers have been used for thousands of years by Mongolians and other eastern natio, nbecause they are spacious , lightweight and very portable. Due to the financial crises and economic downturn, people are now using yurts as cheap alternative housing.
We sell our yurts either complete or in various kits. They come in different sizes (8ft, 12ft, 14ft & 16ft) and with a variety of natural cotton canvas: heavy duty 14oz & 12oz or lightweight 10oz. We also stock natural colored Marine Canvas that is water and mildew resitsant, and fire retardant. We even have organic cotton canvas.
