FAQs - Frequently Asked QuestionsYurts look complicated, are they easy to set up? Yurts are very simple to set up, one person can do it on their own - easily. After you have done it a few times, you should be able to put it up in 45 mins. The key is to make a circle on the ground first to put the wall on. All yurts come with full set-up instructions. Can you live in your yurts? My Yurts are not really designed for year round living and are not engineered for snow load. I make them to be lightweight, portable and easily set up. Also if you live in a wet climate, the natural canvas will mildew. However the Sunforger Marine Canvas is treated for mold/mildew, UV and water resistance. Can you really load one on the top of a car? Yes it's surprising how small a yurt will pack down. The wall is two sections that concertina together; these measure 72" x 26 ". Everything else just comes apart. The Ring and canvas I normally put inside the car, but they too can go on the roof. Do you offer discounts on quantity? Yes, I can give 10% off. Please contact me if you want to order several or are a non profit. How many people can sleep in a yurt? That really depends on how much room you need. I use a 16ft yurt when I go camping, That is easily enough for a queen bed and 3 full size cots for the kids, plus all our gear - and there is plenty of room left over. Is it safe to have a stove in a yurt? You must always be very careful when you have a fire or wood stove in a yurt or tent. You must make sure you keep the stove at least 3ft away from the side wall and route the stove pipe out through the canvas using a fire proof roof jack. A spark arrester is essential (we recommend two) as you don't want embers landing on your canvas. Do you rent Yurts? Not normally, but I am open to suggestions. If you wanted to try one of our yurts, you can come and stay in one here in Oregon as we have an RV park next door! Do you do custom designs? Yes I do. If there is a particular size yurt or idea you have in mind, please contact me. What care and mainenance must I do? It reall depends on how much use it gets. The wood roof poles and lattice wall will need to sanded and varnished every few years. It is important to keep the ring sealed with varnish as you do not want the veneer layers de-laminating.If you waterproof the natural canvas, this will need to be re applied every few years. The canvas should be brushed off after every use and if left out in the rain, it will self clean a little. Can I get the canvas in different colors? We can make yurts in different colors, but we only stock white. It's important to remember that colored canvas will heat up the yurt when in direct sunlight, so white is best. You can of course paint the canvas with a special latex paint - contact me for more info on the paint. How long does take to get my yurt after I order? Most yurts are made to order as customers have specific requirements or custom work eg. windows, fireproof stove jacks etc. Normally delivery is 4 weeks after placing a deposit. Spring and Summer are the busiest times and can take longer depending on the backlog. What about Spares & Repairs? The really neat thing about yurts is the ability to easily repair it. With normal tents, if a pole get broken or bent, the tent is of no use. The yurt however can loose over half it' roof poles and and lattice and still provide shelter. Wood parts are easy to make or you can purchase them from me. Rips and tears in the canvas can be hand sewn or repaired by any good upholsterer. We of course will do repairs, but shipping is expensive. If you have a question, please email us |
